Robert E. Lee married America Wheeler about 1869 in Southern Georgia. They had at least 4 children: Eliza Jane Lee b. July 15, 1873 d. Sep. 09, 1940 (married William Harrison Register), Jacob "Jake" Lee b. April 05, 1875 d. 1948 (married Edith Register),Elizabeth Lee b. April 1881 d. (unknown) that married( Willis Register)and Dora Frances Lee b. Jun 09 1884 d. 15 Mar 1968 (married David Columbus Avery). Robert E. Lee's 2nd wife was Lessie Starling 1884 - 1947. They had 9 children as follows: Nellie b. abt. 1900; Louise b. Abt. 1902; Pearl b. Abt. 1905; America "Meck" Lee b. abt. 1907; Hattie Lee b. abt. 1909; Ethel Mae Lee b.May 05, 1911 d. Feb. 20, 1886; she married Harry Daniel Christie; Eunice Lee b. abt. 1915; Estelle Lee b. abt. 1918 and Joe Lee b. Abt. 1920. Robert E. Lee enlisted in the Confederate States Army at Isle of Hope, Georgia into the 20th Georgia battalion of Confederate Calvary in the Spring of 1862. In early 1864 his unit was sent to Virginia where it participated in the battles of the Wilderness, Cold Harbor, and Petersburg. At Appromattox a portion of the command broke through the Union lines and joined with General Johnston in North Carolina, participating in the battle at Bentonville. Private Lee mentions being captured at Stoney Creek, Virginia in his pension application. There were two battles of note at Stoney Creek, one in June and one in December of 1864. Private Lee was released from service at Hilton Head, South Carolina at the close of the war. After the war he lived most of his life along the Suwannee River in the communities of Benton and Suwannee Shoals, in North Columbia County, Florida.
