In Memory of Lewis P. Duncan...

Marriage #1 to Sarah A. James,
29 July 1857, Carter County, Kentucky:
Sarah A. James (s, 18, b. Carter Co, res. Barrett's Creek, Carter Co) m. Lewis P. Duncan (s. 22, b. Carter Co, res. Carter Co). Barrett's Creek is near Grayson.

From this union, they had a son named Malan G. Duncan b. 1858 d. 26 Apr 1859 (age 1 year) in Carter Co.

Marriage #2 to Naomi "Omey" Archey,
5 January 1865, Greenup Co., KY:
Duncan, Lewis (age 29; single; b. Greenup Co., KY; parents b. US) Archey, Omey (age 17; single; b. Greenup Co., KY) Obtained Bond Jan. 5, 1865 (Thursday) to be married same day at house of John Archey; bondsman, John Archey; no Minister's return. Source: Greenup County Kentucky Marriages, First 100 Years 1803 to 1903, A-K, by Patricia Porter Phillips.

From this union, they had Celia "Dora", William and Benjamin "Benna". It appears from their 1870 Grayson, Carter, KY census that they also had a son named James, age 4 months, who must have died before their 1880 census. No family lore about him. It's not always conclusive who the parents are in these old censuses, but it appears to be a child of Lewis Duncan. His other brothers enumerated in the same Eli and Jael Duncan (his parents) 1870 census were not married then. Only Lewis was married. Our family only knew stories about the daughter as Dora. It wasn't until researching censuses and finding Dora's children's birth certificates in WA State did I make the connection between Dora and Celia M found in the family's census together.

Civil War

Enlisted in Union Army, under Captain Wolcott, 25 Sep 1861, at Camp Dick Robinson (near Danville in Garrard County, KY); mustered in 12 Jan 1862, at Smithland, KY, and was discharged due to illness, 20 June 1862, at Louisville, KY, where he was hospitalized. Note that Smithland is in Livingston County, KY, which is about 335 miles from the Olive Hill and Carter Cave area where he is buried.

"Union Regiments of Kentucky" p. 485: Lewis Duncan, 20th Infantry, Co. C. Headstone at Burchett-Plummer Cemetery gives this info.

Battle Unit Name: 20th Regiment, Kentucky Infantry
Side: Union
Company: C
Soldier's Rank In: Private
Soldier's Rank Out: Private
Film Number: M386 ROLL 8

Note: Another record for a Lewis P. Duncan can be found in Company K KY 40th Infantry as a private. According to censuses there was a Lewis Duncan born over a decade earlier than this Lewis Duncan and married Elizabeth Gullett. Perplexing thing is the Muster Roll for the Lewis P Duncan in Co K 40 Inf KY gives his age as 29 in Sep 1863 which would be abt 1834 which matches up to the Lewis Duncan's age in Co C 20 Inf. KY who is buried here. The age is 10 years younger than the Lewis P Duncan enumerated with wife Elizabeth in Carter County, KY.

In a "U.S. Pensioners, 1818-1872" (1855-1866 D) record for a Lewis Duncan in Kentucky that lists Sep 1862 (1) and Mar 1863 (2) as payment quarters and it says he re-enlisted 1? Aug 1863. Commencement date: 22 Jan 1863 (not sure what this means). Need to find out if this is the same Lewis Duncan as the one buried at Burchett Plummer Cemetery. If it is him, it makes sense since his brother Robert Thompson Duncan was in Co K KY 40 INF. Although why wouldn't his headstone reflect the re-enlistment infantry rather than his first infantry?

TBD: It's curious why his headstone says Corp. and not Private since his Co C KY 20 INF service records give Private.

Carter County was formed from parts of Greenup County in 1838, so he *could* have been born in Greenup County and then a few years later the county name changed to Carter county. His birthplace varies between Greenup County, KY and Carter County, KY on his two marriage records. If anyone has other sources for his birth city and county and his DEATH DATE and PLACE, please get in touch. I will use Carter County as his birthplace since his brother Robert Thompson who was born in 1837 has a source for being born in Wolf, Carter, KY.

Rattlesnake Ridge Genealogy Group (RRGG) photo album of Burchett Plummer Cemetery which includes photos of the War Memorial Monument which includes inscriptions for L.P. Duncan and brothers R.T. Duncan and W.L. Duncan. Mostly Civil War and a few Mexican American War soldiers. Headstone photos for Eli Duncan and his wife Jael Richards as well as three of their sons mentioned previously.

The RRGG has a CD of cemetery readings from Carter County. On their listing for Corp. L.P. Duncan at Burchett Plummer Cemetery, they give a birth and death date that does not make sense. I believe it's an error. The headstone has no date inscriptions and is very legible. Have not gotten a reply from them yet.
