After the war Anderson taught school while completing his law studies. He was admitted to the bar in 1872 and became a prominent lawyer in Lamar. In 1870 he was elected school commisssioner of Barton County and held this position from 1875 to 1883. He remained active in the field of education throughout his career. In 1877 he received the appointment as public administor of the county and in 1880,was elected for a term of 4 years. In 1902 Anderson was elected to the office of state representative.
