Orton Clifford Bakke, 86, of Fertile, MN, died Monday, July 16, 2012, at Essentia Health, Fosston, MN.
Orton was born on March 10, 1926, in Winger, MN, to John and Marie (Krogstad) Bakke. Orton attended and graduated from McIntosh High School. Following his schooling he entered the US Army during WWII. On February 13, 1948, Orton was united in marriage to Hallis Nansen in McIntosh, MN. Orton worked as a carpenter for Meineke-Johnson Company, in the Pelican Rapids, Fargo, and Fertile areas for many years; as well as doing private jobs for people around Fertile. On August 29, 2001, Hallis passed away. Orton married Charlotte Borseth on June 23, 2012 in Fertile, MN.
Orton enjoyed wood carving, carpentry, cribbage, going to the casino and playing cards with family. He also loved being outside; whether it was going to the lake, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, ice fishing or just sitting outside listening to the neighbor's daycare kids playing. He always looked forward to the Polk County Fair. Orton was always ready to have a cup of coffee and visit with friends and family. A nightly routine was to drive around and look at deer. He would sit outside and admire the surroundings and remark, "Mother Nature paints a pretty picture." Spending time with his grandchildren was always something he looked forward to.
Orton is survived by his wife, Charlotte, Fertile, MN, one son, Gary, Fargo, ND; one daughter, Cheryl (Gus) Swenson, Ulen, MN, 8 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren, four step daughters, Denise (Donnie) Higbee, Houston, TX, Desiree Kise, Ada, MN, Sarah Borseth, Badger, MN, Shelah (Patrick) Gust, Strathconca, MN, 11 step grandchildren, three sisters, Joyce Sannes, Olga Osmondson, both of Fertile, MN, and Grace Peterson, Mpls, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Hallis, a son, Dwight Bakke, three brothers, Leonard, Walter and Melvin.
Funeral service: 11:00 am, Saturday, July 21, 2012, at Union Lake Free Lutheran Church, rural Winger, MN.
Visitation: Friday from 5:00-7:00pm with a 6:30 Prayer Service at Erikson-Vik Funeral Home, Fertile, MN.
Burial: Lima Cemetery, rural Winger, MN
