LYDIA MIDDLETON DEAD.

Former Principal at Old Lower Seminary Dies at Noon Today.

Miss Lydia Middleton, 82, for whom one of Madison‘s schools was named, died at noon today at the home of Edward Pogue, North Madison, After several weeks of failing health. Miss Middleton had been bedfast for a week and had been virtually blind for 10 years.

Miss Middleton graduated from Madison high school at the age of 18 years, taught in the county schools for a few years, then was assigned to the old Lower Seminary where she taught for about 35 years. During that time she served as the school’s principal for many years.

She retired about 20 years ago after teaching for 44 years and for the last eight years she had been making her home in the Pogue residence .

Her only near relatives surviving or a nephew, John Pogue, North Madison, and two cousins, James E. Crozier, Madison, and Elmer L. Crozier, Rykers Ridge. She was never married.

Miss Middleton was a member of Trinity Church, had been active in missionary work and for several years taught the women’s Bible class at Trinity .

When the old lower seminary school building was raised to make room for a new structure, the new school was named for Miss Middleton in recognition of her long and faithful service there. The school was built about 16 years ago.

Funeral services will be held at the Vail Memorial Friday morning at 10:30 with Rev. R. E. Badger and Rev. C. O. Morin, in charge. Burial will be at Fairmount.
