GULFPORT --- Being with someone for nearly 60 years means when they're no longer around, it's the small things that bring pain.
Ask Jessie Johnson. It hit him hard Friday.
"I looked over at the chair where she would sit," he said. "I just broke down."
Helen Louise Johnson, who was born in Simpson County and was known to everybody as Louise, died Wednesday. She was 80.
A member of Pass Road Baptist Church for 31 years, she volunteered in the Pass Road Food Pantry. That made perfectly good sense, considering she spent 25 years with the Gulfport School District, where she was a cafeteria manager before retiring in the 1990s.
"She did the cooking and told the others how to do the cooking," said her husband. "She had a beautiful personality, outgoing. Everybody loved her. She had such a beautiful smile."
He said he knew from the moment he first saw her that she was the one for him. Helen Louise was working at a restaurant when they first locked eyes. He kept going back --- and it wasn't for the food.
"I had my eyes on her," he said. "I drank a lot of coffee."
It was on Jan. 10, 1947, when they were sitting on the porch of a swimming house that he popped the question.
"Would you like to get married tomorrow?" he recalled asking her. She wound up saying yes, and the rest, so to speak, was history.
Now after all those years, he'll have to adjust. And that, he said, won't be easy. Even seeing her smiling face in the Friday paper was hard.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons and a daughter, eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and siblings.
Visitation is today at Pass Road Baptist Church from 1:30 p.m. until the service at 3 p.m. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Gulfport.
