Alton was living in Kintyre, ND when he entered the service and was a member of Company E, 2nd Battalion, 279th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division.

He was listed as Missing in Action when carried away by a flash flood while crossing the river near Inje, North Korea on August 18, 1952 and was presumed dead on December 31, 1953.

His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.

Private Graf was awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
