HERKIMER-Rosemary J. Salanco age 86 of Oberle Road passed away on Wednesday evening June 4, 2008 after a long illness in St. Luke?s Medical Center, New Hartford.



She was born on November 28, 1921 in Ilion, daughter of the late Ralph and Ethel Olds Baum. A lifelong area resident Rosemary was raised in Ilion where she graduated from Ilion High School. A World War II veteran, she entered the US Marine Corps on March 28, 1944. She was honorably discharged on March 7, 1946, attaining the rank the rank of Corporal. After returning home from the war, she was united in marriage with Stephen Salanco on August 3, 1946 in the Annunciation Church in Ilion. They shared a loving and devoted union of sixty-one years until his passing on January 14, 2008.



Together Rosemary and her husband owned and operated Salanco Brothers Dairy Farm in the town of Herkimer. Mrs. Salanco was also employed as a secretary-stenographer for the Remington Arms Company in Ilion and later for the Cornell Extension Service Agriculture and 4-H. She retired in 1980.



As a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Herkimer, Mrs. Salanco had a strong belief in God and led a devoted Episcopal life. Rosemary had a strong sense of community and was a member of the American Legion Post in Cold Brook, East Herkimer Senior Citizens and a charter member of the Herkimer Ladies Elks.



A caring, loving and hopeful person she will be greatly missed and never forgotten.



Surviving are one son, Stephen Thomas Salanco and his wife Cheryl of Herkimer, two grandchildren, Frances Marie Talledo and her husband Juan of Tampa, FL, Jordon Gifford of Herkimer, two nieces, Karen Joyce of Schuyler, Kimberly Joyce of Syracuse and a nephew, Robert Joyce of Syracuse.



Besides her parents and husband Steve she was preceded in death by her son Ralph Salanco in 1973, one brother Ralph Baum who was killed during World War II serving in the Pacific with the United States Marine Corps and a sister, Joyce Joyce.



Funeral service with Holy Eucharist will be held on Monday at 11:00 am in Christ Episcopal Church, Herkimer. The Reverend Paul Bailey, Rector will officiate. Interment with military honors in Oak Hill Cemetery will be private. There are no calling hours.



Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the Christ Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, 300 North Main Street, Herkimer, NY 13350. Envelopes will be available at the church.



The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the second floor IMCU staff at St. Luke?s Medical Center, New Hartford for the care and compassion shown to Rosemary during her hospital stay.
