BEATRICE BAUMANN

Authorities Probe Girl's Death In Mystery Accident
Beatrice Baumann, 13, died this noon of injuries received a short
while earlier when apparently struck by a car in front of the Madison
school on North 7th street. She is the daughter of Mrs. Marie Baumann,
819 Chicago street.
Police were not sure at a late hour this afternoon whether the girl
had been struck by a hit-run motorist or whether some motorist, driving
through the leaves along the curb, had hit her and continued on without
knowing that he had hit anyone.
The girl was rushed to the Holy Family hospital by Herbert Vander Bloemen,
who lives nearby, after his son, Albert, 5, had come home saying a badly
hurt girl was lying in the street. She was dead upon admission to the
hospital, according to Coroner Theodore Teitgen. Vander Bloemen said the
girl was still living when he, with the assistance of Ray Johnson, took
her to the hospital in his car which is equipped with a siren.
Chest Crushed
Coroner Teitgen said the girl sustained a crushed chest and that the right
side of her skull was crushed and her jaw broken.
"On information we have received so far," Chief of Police J.J. Kuplic said,
"it appears that the girl was playing in the large pile of leaves along the
curb and that the car or whatever hit her did not know about hitting her."
Chief Kuplic, coroner Teitgen and District Attorney Danielson talked with
the girl's brother and sister who had been with her earlier in the morning,
and they said the three Baumann children had apparently been playing in
Union park and that Beatrice had come down from the park ahead of the others,
and may have been hiding in the leaves.
The girl's coat was found placed over the school sign which stands between
the curb and sidewalk just south of the driveway into the Madison school
which is on the east side of the street. The girl was found with her head
over the curb and her body out into the street.
Find No Witnesses
Chief Kuplic said that his department had been unable to find anyone who had
actually seen what had happened, but that many persons nearby were to be
questioned to see if some further light could be thrown on the mishap.
An inquest will be held, Coroner Teitgen announced this afternoon, but the
coroner's jury has not yet been selected. The jury is expected to view the
body this evening at the Wattawa, Urbanek and Schlei funeral home where it
was taken.
The Rev. Louis Schorn, pastor of Sacred Heart congregation at which school
Beatrice was a seventh grade student, was on the scene just before Vander
Bloemen, he told authorities but when Vander Bloemen came up the girl was
put in his car because it had the siren. Father Schorn said he was driving
north on 7th street when the girl's brother flagged him down.
The girl was apparently struck by a vehicle going north on 7th street. The
Sacred Heart school is just across the street from the Madison school on 7th
street. The gutters on both sides of the street are well filled with leaves.

Take Measurements
Authorities took many measurements at the scene of the mishap and checked
on various tire marks found in the vicinity. Several pictures were also taken.
Beatrice Baumann was born in this city in 1929 and was a student in the Sacred
Heart school.
Survivors are the mother, five sisters, (private); three brothers, (private).
The body is at the Wattawa, Urbanek and Schlei funeral home. Funeral plans
await word from California from the brother.
