MERWIN V. BAST

Merwin V. Bast, age 67, of 1707-30th St., Two Rivers, died Saturday afternoon,
June 19, 2004, at Aurora Medical Center, Two Rivers.
Funeral services will be held at noon on Wednesday, June 23, 2004 at The Pfeffer
Funeral Home, Manitowoc. Officiating at the service will be Deacon Ken Coenen
with burial to follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc.
Merwin was born on Sept. 16, 1936 in Sheboygan, to Evangeline Bast of Manitowoc
and the late Alfred Bast. He attended the Manitowoc public school system and
graduated from Lincoln High School in 1954. He attended the Midwest School of
Broadcasting in Chicago and moved on to become a radio announcer in Hopkinsville,
Ky. After securing a position at WTRW in Two Rivers as radio announcer, Craig
McCoy, he moved back to Wisconsin where he met and married Patricia Boettcher
of Dresser in 1963. In 1966, the Basts purchased and operated the Tasty Snack
Restaurant until 1972. He opened and operated Bast Jewelry in downtown Two Rivers
and later added retail stores in Grafton and North Ridge. In 1976, Merwin led the
Two Rivers Central Park beautification project as chairman of the Two Rivers
Bicentennial Commission. He was also nominated Wisconsin small business “Man of
the Year” in 1977 in recognition of his leadership and contributions to business,
cultural, social and government progress. After leaving the retail business in
the late ‘70s, he sold and distributed to retail stores in the Midwest until semi-
retirement in 1999. Merwin was also a longstanding member of the Two Rivers Elks
Club Lodge #1380. Merwin enjoyed traveling, gardening, bird watching and spending
time with his family.
He is survived by his mother: Evangeline Bast, Manitowoc; his wife: Pat Bast, Two
Rivers; three sons and daughters-in-law: Jeff and Stephanie Bast, Temecula, Calif.;
Scott and Rhoni Bast, Libertyville, Ill.; Dan and Nancy Bast, Oconomowoc. He is
also survived by seven grandchildren; Christopher, Jake, Sidney, Bailee, Colton,
Emma and Ethan, as well as one sister and brother-in-law; Bonnie and Richard
Riederer, Oconomowoc; two nieces, a nephew and their families, and one sister-in-
law. Merwin was preceded in death by his father, Alfred.
The family will greet relatives and friends at The Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc
on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at noon.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. LaLiberte and the nurses
and staff at Aurora Medical Center, Two Rivers, for all the care and concern given
to Merwin.
