Dr. M. L. Bast Dies; Dentist for 56 Years
Dr. Magnus L. Bast, 91, of 514 Cleveland Ave., died Sunday evening at Holy
Family Hospital. A dentist for more than 50 years, Dr. Bast was the last charter
and honorary life member of Knights of Columbus Council 710 and Fraternal Order
of Eagles Aerie No. 706 of Manitowoc. He was charter member of the Manitowoc
Catholic Order of Foresters and an honorary life member of the American Dental
Assn.
Dr. Bast was born Oct. 18, 1873, at St. Paul, Minn., son of the late Mr. and Mrs.
William Bast. He married Mary Schilling Oct. 9, 1901 at St. Paul and the couple
observed its golden wedding in 1951. He was a graduate of Loyola University School
of Dental surgery, Chicago, with the Class of 1900. The couple moved to Manitowoc
in 1901 when Dr. Bast began his practice of dentistry. He followed the profession
56 years, retiring in 1959.
In 1957, the Eagles Aerie had an initiation class in his honor. At this event he
expressed his appreciation for having the evening dedicated to him. He told of
his 53 years in the Eagles and the many fine experiences gained through this
association.
His wife died Feb. 12, 1960. Surviving are a daughter, Dr. Viola B. McCully, of
Manitowoc and four sons, Leonard E. of Memphis, John R. and Evarist of Manitowoc
and Eugene M. of Two Rivers, 10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Three
brothers and a sister preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at Pfeffer Funeral Home and at 9
a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Rev. Claude LeClair officiating. Burial
will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m. Tuesday. Members of the FOE will
have memorial services at 7 p.m. and the Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. by the
K.C., COF, parish and friends.
