Emily C. Bast (Doty), age 88, passed away Monday, Sept. 26, 2005, in Wooster,
Ohio, following a period of declining health,
Emily was born Aug. 11, 1917, in Auburn, Mich., the daughter of Edward and Anna
Doty. She grew up in Bay City, Mich., and graduated from Bay City High School
in 1934. After graduating from beauty school, she moved to Detroit, where she
met the love of her life, Bernard M. Bast. The two were married on April 6, 1941,
in Napoleon, Ohio, and Emily lived and worked in Niles, Mich., while Bern served
in World War II. After the war, they settled in East Detroit, Mich., before
moving their family to Manitowoc in 1969. Some of Emily's happiest years were
spent at their house on Lake Michigan's shore. Emily and Bern spent several years
taking student pictures at schools in the area, and Emily also worked as a
teacher's aid at Stangel Elementary and at the United Way in Manitowoc. She moved
to Wooster, Ohio, in 2002 to be closer to her daughter.
Survivors include one son: David, Two Rivers; one daughter: Sharon Anderson (Michael),
Wooster, Ohio; eight grandchildren: Eric (Kelly) Sullivan; Rachel Anderson; Michelle
(Derek) Meyer; Laura (Gary) Oliviera; Bernie, Robert (R.J.), Kayla and Katie Bast;
three great-grandchildren: Alex Anderson; Blake and Layla Oliviera. She is also
survived by a special nephew: Jack Swarthout and friends: Debra Bast and Sue Benzinger.
She was preceded in death by her husband: Bernard, in 1989; three brothers: Elmer,
Clarence and Russell; and her sister: Winifred Swarthout.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Emily's life will be held Oct. 28, at 11 a.m. at
First Presbyterian Church, Manitowoc. In lieu of flowers, a memorial may be sent
to West View Manor, 1715 Mechanicsburg Road, Wooster, Ohio 44691; or the Alzheimer's
Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601-7633.
