Elmer W. Baeckman, 36, (photo) of 516 North Fourth street, chemist at the
city's sewage treatment plant since it was opened in 1940, died Saturday
night at the Holy Family hospital. He had been seriously ill with a blood
ailment for the past several weeks.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Urbanek and Schlei
funeral home. The Rev. C.H. Phipps of the first Presbyterian church will
officiate and burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.
He was born in this city in 1909 and was graduated from Lincoln high school
in 1927. Entering Dakota Wesleyan university, at Mitchell, S.D., he received
a bachelor of arts degree, majoring in chemistry. While attending school there
he was manager of the basketball team for two seasons and a member of Kappa Pi
Phi fraternity.
Following his graduation from the Dakota school, Mr. Baeckman entered a special
Firestone tire school at Akron, Ohio, and returning to Manitowoc, took employ-
ment with the Clark Oil company until his appointment to the position of chemist
at the sewage plant.
Survivors include his mother, Mrs. August Baeckman of this city; two brothers,
Bernard and Francis both of this city; two sisters, Irene and Mrs. Donald Cyr
of this city.
The body may be viewed at the funeral home until the hour of the services.
