Harvey J. Backus Dies at Hospital
Harvey J. Backus, 63, of 1129 New York avenue, Manitowoc, member of the Manitowoc
police and fire commission, died Friday afternoon at the Holy Family hospital. He
had been ill several months.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Paul Methodist church. The
Rev. Francis Foulke will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen cemetery
Mr. Backus was born in 1887 at Independence, Kan. He spent his early life in that
city. He was elected sheriff, serving eight years in that office. He was the
youngest person ever to hold that office in Kansas.
He located in Manitowoc in 1926 and was a shipping foreman at the Manitowoc Portland
Cement company, a position he held until his death.
Mr. Backus was named to the police and fire commission in Manitowoc in 1945 to fill
the unexpired term of Frank Petrosky, who resigned and was renamed to a five year
term in 1948. He served as secretary of the commission and in 1948 was elected
president. He was a member of the Odd Fellows lodge.
Mr. Backus married the former Elsie Madden in Independence in 1910. She died in 1922.
In 1931 he was married to Mrs. Josephine Hallisy of Manitowoc.
He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Frank DeF'aut and Mrs. Louis Ansorge,
both of Manitowoc; four sons, Carl Backus of Geneva, Ill., Richard Hallisy of
Bloomsburg, Pa., and Raymond and Leo Hallisy both of Manitowoc; brother, Lon Backus
of Wichita Falls, Tex.; six sisters, Mrs. C. R. Shannon, and Mrs. Hattie Fleek both
of Davenport, Ia., Mrs. T. J. Roark of Independence, Kan., Mrs. Eldora Moore of
Bartelsville, Okla, Mrs. Willis Sims of Wichita Falls, Tex., and Mrs. Ed Estes of
Detroit; 16 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Friends may call at the Mittnacht funeral home in Manitowoc from Sunday non until
11 a.m. Monday when the casket will be moved to the church.
