Zebia was born in the summer of 1815 in Maine to parents Abijah Crane and his wife "Becca". The Cranes were early settlers in Massachusetts with ties going back to the 1600s and beyond to England. Her grandfather, Col. John Crane, was a Revolutionary War veteran and was said to be the first settler in Whiting.

She married William Bell of Whiting, Maine and they had seven known children who she raised at the Bell family farm by herself after the death of her husband.

Their children were Arletta, Robert, Roberta, William A., Zebia, Julius and Sidney.

Zebia continued to live at the farm until her death in 1900.
