John G. Baker passed away at the Loofbourow Hospital Monroe, Tuesday July 2nd, aged 83 years and 26 days.
The deceased was born in Barre, Vermont June 5th, 1829 and when a young man twenty years of age started for the West. He spent his first winter in Albany, Wis., where he taught the first school ever held in that village. He studied law in Beloit; was well educated, a great reader and always kept well posted on current affairs.
The subject of this sketch was united in marriage to Mary Jane Van Matre in October 1857. They purchased a farm south of town where they lived many years. About 35 years ago they bought the farm adjoining the village east of town, where they have since resided. Mr. Baker operated his farm for many years and taught school winters. He was Justice of the Peace for about fifty years, town clerk, member of the school board for a number of terms and always occupied a prominent position in this community. He was an able counselor and a good friend to all.
The funeral took place Friday at the residence, conducted by Rev. R.M. Hambrook. The remains were laid to rest in the Graceland cemetery.
He is survived by his wife and four children, Mrs. Ira LaBarron, of Evanston, Ill., Mrs. M.L. Paulson, of Evansville, Wis., William V. Baker, of Charlton, Iowa and Mrs. H.D. Thomas of Blanchardville, who have the sympathy of their many friends.
