J. J. Abernethy, 52, veteran Texas insurance man and secretary of the Republic Insurance Company, died at his home, 3410 Lindenwood, Monday following an extended illness.

Mr. Abernethy came to Dallas in 1935. For many years, he was engaged in the insurance business in Waco, where he lived most of his life after leaving his birthplace, Gonzales, Gonzales county.

Prior to entering the insurance field, he was connected with the Santa Fe Railroad. Since coming to Dallas, he had supervised agents in North Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado and Missouri.

Mr. Abernethy was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and prominent in Southwestern insurance circles, being an active member of Blue Goose International.

Surviving are his wife, a daughter, Mrs. H. J. Gustafen; a son, James R. Abernethy, all of Dallas; his mother, Mrs. Anna S. Abernethy, Newport News, VA: two brothers, Brig. General Robert S. Abernethy, Newport News, VA, and william S. Abernethy, New York City, and a sister of San Francisco.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the residence by Dr. C. T. Caldwell of Waco. Burial will be in Waco.

Pallbearers will be John Crawford, Lee Holloway, George W. Hanway, C. D. Bowman, Fred A. Pierce, William B. Steele, Will Carroll and E. Hearst Blackwell.
