He was a retired farmer and of the Primitive Baptist faith. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ruth Abbott of the home; five children: Donald Gray and wife Sarah Jo Abbott, Doss Franklin and wife Patricia, and Jewel and husband Dwight Sykes all of Walnut Cove, Faye and husband Bill Hunter of Pilot Mountain, and Deborah and husband Keith White of Walnut Cove; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister Euna McGee of Thomasville. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Burroughs Funeral Home with Elder James Wilkins, Elder William Dodson, and Mr. Winfred Tuttle officiating. Burial will follow in Palmyra United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Tuesday evening at the funeral home and other times at the home.
