In the 1910 Census, George W. Bennett is with wife Lucinda and children Nara (Norah), Fred and a servant/housekeeper named Rebecca Lauren. He was 29 years of age. In this Census he is an engineer, and is on record in this Census as not being able to read or write. Note that he reports his place of birth as being different in each Census, and therefore whether or not he could read/write at this time remains a mystery. He shows his place of birth for himself, his father and his mother as being in Virginia, though we know from his marriage and death record that he was born in Piney Flats, TN.
In the 1920 Census, George Bennett is listed with wife Ada (Lucinda) and children Nora, Fred, Virgie (Virginia) and Hugh. George is still listed as not being able to read or write, and now shows that he and both of his parents were born in Tennessee. He is stated as working as a coal miner.
In the 1930 Census. George is shown with wife Lucinda and son Fred. This Census was enumerated on April 22, 1930. He died the 3rd of July 1930. He lived just two months long enough to be registered in this Census. He is listed as having a radio set, an important communications tool at the time. He shows his state of birth as Tennessee, and his father's state of birth as North Carolina, and his mother's as North Carolina. His line of work is shown to be plumbing, indicating a change in career. Perhaps he had retired from mining.
George used to give his children silver dollars as gifts. At that time, a silver dollar was a very valuable item to give a child.
