Josiah was the first child of Catharine Haag Naftzger and the 9th child of John R. Naftzger Sr. He had one full sibling, a brother, Ephriam (1832). Another close brother, a half brother, was Jeremiah, who was 3 years older (1826).

Josiah and Jeremiah had a wonderful adventure in the 1850s when they left Ohio for the California Gold Rush. Letters left behind give us great insight into these men, their values and their life at that time. They were very upright men - as Josiah's brother Ephriam was described in a biography, he was"so upright he leaned a little backward" - which probably applied to all three of these brothers and certainly their father.

Josiah married Mary Eleanor Carter May 21, 1863 in Ohio.

Mary and Josiah had 5 children:

Sarah Alzadie (Richmond) 1864
Charles V. 1865
Catherine May (Karn) 1867
Ernest Carter 1875
Edward D. 1877

His children gave him 24 grandchildren, one passed away in childhood. His youngest son, Eddie died at 10 years of age.

Josiah became a widower in 1880. He kept his children close to him throughout his life. The family moved from Ohio to Michigan, where the last two children were born.

With the exception of Sarah, the children and Josiah went to South Dakota and then eventually all of the family except Charles ended up in Marion County at the time of Josiah's death. Charles later also settled in the Willamette Valley.

The older children, especially Catherine (Aunt Kate) helped Josiah raise the smaller boys, Ernest and Eddie. They were only 5 and 3 at the time Josiah became a widower. The children clung close together with Josiah.

Josiah was an astute businessman - and great farmer who, like his father, was a life long, devoted member of the United Brethren Church. His father-in-law was a preacher of the United Brethren Church. Josiah was a member of the Salem United Brethren Church at the time of his death.

Some of Josiah's nephews stated he was known as a great teacher. He was superintendent of the United Brethren Sunday school in Orange, Michigan. (near Portland, where his wife, Mary is buried beside her father)

Note: Josiah married Julia A. Smith, the widow of a United Brethren minister, July 16, 1891 while living in South Dakota. She returned to Pennsylavania and lived with her children. She was not mentioned in Josiah's obituary. (May have returned to PA when Josiah and children moved to Oregon.)

His children surviving him were: Sarah Alzadie Richmond of Salem; Catherine Karn of Gervais; Ernest Carter of Scottsburg, Oregon and Charles V. of South Dakota. Son, Edward, passed away in 1886.

He passed away from a cerebral hemorrhage (stroke) that occurred May 7, 1907.

Services were held at the home of his daughter, Mrs. H. A. Richmond, 1807 Broadway, Salem.
