Cassie Ellen Wiltsie, was the daughter of George Wiltsie (Oct 16, 1846 - April 8, 1880) and Rachel Elliott (June 16, 1845 - Jan. 16, 1933). Cassie's mother, Rachel-Elliott-Wiltsie-Thomas, was the founding minister of the Hemlock Friends Church.

Cassie was born, December 6, 1877 in Tipton County, Indiana near the town of Sharpsville. Her father, George Wiltsie died when she was two years old. This left her mother, Rachel with seven children, including two foster children. The oldest foster child, Harry Cleveland became a telegrapher and helped all he could, but died in his 20's of T.B. Then baby Leota died, she and her father, George Wiltsie are buried in the Back creek Cemetery near Fairmount, Indiana.

When Cassie was five year old, in 1882, Rachel married Henry Thomas. He was a well to do farmer that lived near Kokomo, Indiana. Henry had been a widower for quite some time, and had a large family, but they were nearly all grown and gone, though they lived close by. They all made Rachel and her children feel welcome.

There wasn't a Quaker Meeting in the community, so Cassie's mother, Rachel started one at Hemlock. She became a recorded Friends minister in 1885, and preached at the Hemlock Meeting for many years. The Meeting is still active to this day. (1999)

When Cassie was 12 years old, she had learned all she could at the country school near them in Tipton County. She wanted more education very badly, and an Uncle and Aunt in Marion invited her to come and live with them during the school year. During these years, she also took elocution lessons (the art of public speaking), and received a diploma from the Detroit School of Elocution.

Cassie had two more years of High School left in Marion, when her Aunt and Uncle decided to move to Fairmount to be near their only daughter, who had married Ancel Winslow there. It was decided that Cassie would attend the Fairmount Quaker Academy. She was broken hearted at leaving her High School friends in Marion, and was not in a very good mood when she attended her first day at Fairmount Quaker Academy. To make matters worse, she did not have the right books! A nice young man, by the name of Guy H. Kelsay was nice enough to loan her his books, and you know how that story finally turns out!

Upon graduation from the Fairmount Academy, Guy Kelsay entered Purdue to study Electrical Engineering, and Cassie went back to the Academy to get a teacher's license. She also taught elocution lessons after school and on Saturdays. When she was home in the summer, she taught them at Hemlock. She and Guy were always saving their money for school during these years.

Cassie taught a year at Backcreek School near Fairmount, and got out early enough to take a term at Earlham Quaker College in Richmond, Indiana. Earlham had a department of elocution and gave her credit for her training and also for her extra year at the Fairmount Academy, so she was able to graduate from Earlham in the spring of 1900, the same year Guy Kelsay graduated from Purdue University.

Cassie never missed attending Alumni Day at Earlham College for 65 years, until in 1966, when she fell and broke her hip. She was a member of the Marion First Friends Church at Marion, Indiana, and was a member of the Women's Christian Temperance Union from the time she was 12 years old.

Cassie lived a long and productive life, and died on May 10, 1973 at the age of 95 years. She spent her last remaining eight years at Friends Fellowship Community in Richmond, Indiana.
