Religious Figure. Founder of the Protestant Truth Society, he objected to "ritualism" in Church of England services and the trend toward Anglo-Catholicism. He created disturbances in churches across England. He was wounded by a sharp chisel or file thrown by a member of a crowd, following a lecture meeting at Birkenhead, England. He developed blood poisoning, and died of pneumonia which could not be directly attributed to the wound. The man who threw the chisel was charged with manslaughter but was acquitted.
