Actor. For over four decades, he was a distinguished British character performer of stage, films and television. At age 13, he joined the National Youth Theatre and after attending the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, he worked in repertory in Northampton, Birmingham, making his London Theatre debut in "Loot" (1967). After a number of small film and television roles, he made his big screen debut as the title role of Winston Churchill in "Young Winston" (1972). His many other memorable film credits included "The Three Musketeers" (1973), "The Four Musketeers" (1974), "All Creatures Great and Small" (1975), "Zulu Dawn" (1979), "Supergirl" (1984) and "Wuthering Heights" (1992). For television, he was most noted for appearing on the BBC series "Judge John Deed" as Simon Ward Everard (2001-07) and as Bishop Gardiner on "The Tudors" (2009-10). He died after a long illness at age 70.
