John Arnold who Came Here in '56, Dead at Age of 75.
HELD OFFICE AS GAUGER OF PORT
John B. Arnold, pioneer and well known resident and former agent for the
American Express Company, died at his home on South Seventh street early this
morning, aged 75. Mr. Arnold, owing to his advanced age, had been failing for
some time and for several weeks he had been confined to his home with little
hope that his life could be prolonged for long. The funeral will be held
Wednesday from the late home, at 2, Rev. Sheppley officiating and interrment
being at Evergreen cemetery.
Mr. Arnold was born at Ogdensburg, N.Y., and came to Manitowoc 54 years ago as
a youth of 21 years and soon after his arrival he secured a position as a
teacher of the school at Two Creeks, continueing (sic) in the position for some
years. Mr. Arnold was appointed United States gauger for this port. In the early
80's, about 1884 or '85 Mr. Arnold became local agent for the American Express
Company and retained the positon until succeeded by W.W. Delano, present agent
of the company, in 1887. Of late years Mr. Arnold had lived a retired life.
Mr. Arnold was married in 1882 in this city to Mrs. Bertha Jacobs, who with one
son, Harry J. Arnold, now in British Columbia, survives. Mr. Arnold, Jr., will
be unable to reach the city in time for the funeral of his father.
Mr. Arnold was one of the best known pioneers of the city and had an extensive
acquaintance throughout Manitowoc county.
