Dr. Andrews, 73, Dies Playing Golf at Lakeside Club (photo)
MANITOWOC-Dr. Malcolm P. Andrews, 73, of 836 North 15th St., eye, ear,
nose and throat specialist here for 33 years, died suddenly of a heart
attack late Tuesday afternoon while playing a round of golf with his
family at Lakeside Country Club.
Dr. Andrews had been at his office during the day and shortly after 4 p.m.
accompanied his wife and his son and daughter in law, Dr. and Mrs. Edson
Andrews of Tallahassee, Fla., to the links. Dr. Edson Andrews, wife and
three children are vacationing at the Andrews home.
The foursome had finished the first seven holes and were teeing off on
the eighth, when Dr. Andrews complained of feeling ill. He died a few
minutes later.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Mittnacht Funeral
Home. Dr. C.H. Phipps of the First Presbyterian church will officiate and
burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
Dr. Andrews was born at Lebanon, Ill., in 1879 and after attending schools
there enrolled in McKendrie College of Illinois. Later he enrolled at the
University of Illinois where he was graduated from the medical school of
the university.
Served Railroad
He engaged in general medical practice at Abbotsford, Wis., for five years,
where he served as division surgeon of the Wisconsin Central Railroad. He
next located at Beloit where he practiced for seven years and then sold out
to enter military service in World War I. He was waiting assignment when the
armistice was signed.
By this time Dr. Andrews was specializing in eye, ear, nose and throad (sic),
and in 1919 located in this city. He was active for years in professional and
civic circles. He served six years on the Board of Education including one term
as president, retiring in 1941.
His hobby was golf and for years he played at the Lakeside Country Club, winning
the championship of the club in his earlier years.
In 1946 Dr. Andrews left the city temporarily to be resident physician at Florida
State College for Women at Tallahassee, where his son, Edson, is located, but the
next year returned to Manitowoc to resume his practise.
Active in "Great Books"
Dr. Andrews was active in literary circles, a member of the Great Books club and
in 1942 published a book of original poems titled "Reveries in Rhyme."
His affiliations include the Wisconsin Medical Society, Manitowoc County Medical
Society, Dale Carnegie Club, Kiwanis Club, Masonic Order, the American Society of
Opthalmology and Larvngolory, life member of the Rochester Surgeons club, the
Oto-Opthalmic Society of Milwaukee, American Medical Association, and the
radiological Society of North America.
Dr. Andrews married Miss Mabel B. Downey in 1910. She survives with a son, Dr. Edson
Andrews and three grandchildren, (Survivors omitted for privacy.)
