LAKES CAPTAIN DIES AT 93 AT THE RESIDENCE (photo)
Capt. Peter Anderson, Father Of Second Ward Alderman, Was Shocked in Fall
Captain Peter Anderson, 93, father of Alderman Peter Anderson of the
second ward, died today at the home, 711 North Seventh street. Death
was due to the shock of a fall he suffered a week ago Sunday.
Capt. Anderson started sailing the seven seas at the age of 14 and was
a resident of Manitowoc since 1867. He was one of the early day ship-
builders in this port and sailed vessels which he helped construct.
Retiring from the lakes the deceased engaged in the wood and coal business
with his son, Peter, and of late years had been living a retired life.
Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon from the home on North
Seventh street. Interment will be at Evergeen cemetery.
The deceased was born in Risor, Norway, in 1841. Like other young men
of the Norwegian settlement he early took to the sea. He started sailing
before the mast in 1855. In the next 12 years he visited almost every
country on the globe. He was in Cuba when President Lincoln was
assassinated.
Here in 1867
In 1866 Capt. Anderson located at New York city, and the following year
came west to Manitowoc. He resumed sailing on the lakes and was one of
the builders of the schooner Felicitus on the river bank here. He captained
this boat for several seasons. He was also part owner and captain of the
schooner four Brothers.
Gradually Capt. Anderson saw the vast fleet of sailing vessels disappear
from the lakes, giving way to steamers and the present day ore and coal
carriers. After more than 50 years of sailing he retired and joined his
son in the coal and wood business on North Seventh street in 1905. In
later years this business was discontinured.
In 1873 Capt. Anderson was married to Miss Marie Hansen, also a native of
Norway, in this city. She is now 86 years of age. The couple observed the
60th anniversary of their marriage at a quiet home affair here a little over
a year ago. They were perhaps the oldest living couple in the city.
Survivors are the widow, three daughters, Barbara and Hannah, city and
Henrietta, Milwaukee; and a son, Alderman Peter Anderson. Another daughter,
Nellie, died six years ago.
