Ruth Caroline Hogan Alecksen was born April 15, 1910, in Escanaba, Mich., daughter
of the late Anton and Karen Ingebregtsen Hogan, both born in Norway. Ruth was the
first born of four children. Preceding her in death were two brothers: Elmer Hogan
of Manitowoc, and Harry Hogan of Escanaba. Her surviving sister: Margaret Jones and
husband, Dean, reside in Walnut Creek, Calif. Also preceding Ruth in death were
three of her six children: David Dean Alecksen in 1994; Karen Glee Alecksen in
1999; and Elissa Alecksen Menzel in 2002. She is survived by three children: Cheryl
Benson and husband, John, California; Beth Bloom, California; and James Alecksen,
Manitowoc. Ruth married Vernon R. Alecksen of Manitowoc, June 29, 1941. He preceded
her in death in 1991, after 50 years of marriage. Vernon was a lifelong Manitowoc
employee of both Manitowoc Shipbuilding and Burger Boat Company. The center of
Ruth's life was love, faith and her family, a mixture of which she gave back to her
church family at First Lutheran. She also enjoyed 17 years as church secretary and
her work at the Capitol Civic Centre, both as an usher and in the ticket office.
Her lifetime friends were special to her and she appreciated their friendship. Ruth
especially loved to travel. She made many trips to Japan to visit dear friends and
to Norway to visit relatives. She traveled to the beaches of Maui and of course to
California to visit her children, sister and grandchildren. She is survived by eight
grandchildren: Scott Alecksen, Illinois; Curtis Menzel and his wife, Dana, California;
Frank Menzel, California; Sydne Roth and her husband, Matt, California; Jordan Benson,
California; Brooke Bloom, California; Cristina Bloom, California; and Derek Ailes
Alecksen, California. In April 2003, Ruth was blessed and delighted with her first
great-grandchild: Sophia Elissa Menzel.
Relatives and friends may call at First Lutheran Church on Saturday from noon until
the time of service at 1 p.m. Memorials may be made to the First Lutheran Church
Organ Fund. The Jens Family Funeral Home and Crematory is assisting the Alecksen
family.
