KAREN GLEE ALECKSEN

Karen Glee Alecksen, age 55, of 416 1/2 McAuley St., Oakland, Calif., died
November 26, 1999, at Alta Bates Hospital, Oakland, Calif.
Memorial Services were held at Trinity Lutheran Church, Oakland, Calif. Rev. Mary
Stein Webber officiated. Cremation has taken place.
She was born November 1, 1944, in Manitowoc, daughter of Ruth and the late Vernon
Alecksen. She was graduate of Lincoln High School and also a 1966 graduate of the
University of Wisconsin where she earned a degree in social work with a minor in
sociology. After graduation, she moved to Connecticut and worked in the foster care
system. In Connecticut, she met her life long friend, Ben Ailes. In 1974, Karen had
a rock climbing accident that left her Paraplegic. She met this tragedy with
characteristic energy and positive attitude. She then moved from snowy Connecticut
to live in California. Her love for music and people found her working in the office
of Salem Lutheran Home, Piedmont Childrens Choir, St. Francis Hospital. Through the
Looking Glass and the Disability Rights Education Defense Fund found her very active.
She was a member of the church choir, was church secretary and belonged to the Bay
Area Lutheran Chorale.
Survivors include one son, Derek, who was born in 1979 and is a junior at Oberlin
College, Ohio; her life long companion and the father of her son Derek, Benjamin
Ailes; her mother, Ruth Alecksen, 916 N. 6th St., Manitowoc; one brother, James
Alecksen, Manitowoc; sisters, Cheryl Benson and her husband John and their children,
Sydne and Jordan, Elissa Menzel, Curtis and Frank Menzel, Tom father, Beth Ann Bloom,
Jon husband and their children, Cristina, Brooke Ann; a nephew, Scott Alecksen who is
the son of David. She was preceded in death by her father, Vernon in 1991 and one
brother, David in 1994.
The Chapel of the Chimes, Oakland, Calif., assisted the family with funeral arrangements.
