He was born in Turbotville, the son of the late Hurd and Thelma (Losch) Anstadt.

He wed Patricia Ann (Specht) Anstadt.

Vern was a graduate of Montgomery High School.

He enlisted in the Marines after high school and served three tours in the South Pacific, including in Guadalcanal. He worked in combat engineering, as a construction chief and as a photolithographer.

For 37 years, Vern was a postal carrier and clerk for the Montgomery post office. He also owned and operated Anstadt Strawberry Farm, later known as the Allenwood Nursery, for almost 30 years.

He was a life member of the American Legion in Watsontown and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in New Albany. He was also a 32nd-degree member of the Williamsport Consistory, Warrior Run Royal Arch Chapter 246 and a life member of Muncy Lodge 299, Free & Accepted Masons, where he was a recipient of a 50-year membership pin.

Vern served on the Warrior Run school board and the Union County Planning Commission. He was chairman of the Allenwood Water Authority and was a founding member of the Allenwood Rod and Gun Club. He was a volunteer fireman in Allenwood for many years.


Surviving, in addition to his wife and his former wife, Jane (Treon) Anstadt of Lewisburg, are two sons, Dr. George Anstadt of Pittsford, N.Y., and Dr. David Anstadt of Cortland, Ohio; one daughter, Velma Lubliner of East Stroudsburg; five stepchildren, Mark Charest and Christopher Charest, both of Brooklyn, N.Y., Michael Charest of Winfield, Kim Cooper of Manchester, Md., and David Charest of Langhorne; 15 grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; two sisters, Nedra Johnston of Mercersburg and Velma Steif of Tennessee; and one brother, Jay Anstadt of Vermont.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Darrel Anstadt.
