Son of William Smith of Culpeper county, VA. He moved his family to St. Louis in 1810 and soon purchased a lot on the east side of Main street just north of Market. There, in 1812, William Smith built the second brick residence in St. Louis. It also served as his store. He became director of the first bank in the village of St. Louis, then died 28 Sept 1817 at the age of 45. His children knew no hardship. On 29 Dec 1827 his widow married Lewis Edward Hempstead.

In 1821, young John Smith and Alexander Ferguson opened Smith & Ferguson, Dry Goods Merchants at 7 North Main. Ferguson was quickly bought out. That year, John married Miss Louisa McDougall in New York City.

At the organization of the State Bank of Missouri, 1837, John B. Smith became its first first president.
