Son of Nathaniel and Martha (Gray) Dickinson. Acquired the family home, Mercer Hall Plantation, from the heirs of his grandfather, Richard Dickinson, in 1840. He lived the remainder of his life there and was buried there. Family graves were later covered over by a garden when the land and home were sold.
He married Susan Catherine Mansfield on 27 June 1838.
Hugh and Susan (Mansfield) Dickinson had issue:
William Christian Dickinson Sr. (1843-1923)
Florence Mercer Dickinson (1847-1915)
Arthur Gray Dickinson (1850-1922)
Emma Mansfield Dickinson (1854-1933)
Hugh Quarles Dickinson (1855-1925)
Frank Powell Dickinson (1857-1934)
Hugh Mercer Dickinson had the following slaves:
1850 - 26
1860 - 26
It is presumed that he had slaves as early as 1840 when he acquired Mercer Hall, but this is unproven (2016).
