Dr. Edmund Pendleton Gaines
Graduated from University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1845. After practicing medicine in Toulminville, he moved to Mobile in 1852 to practice medicine until he died. "He was in charge of the Alabama Hospital in Richmond, Alabama in 1861, but his health failed and he returned to his home in Mobile before the war was over. He contacted the lung disease and through the success of his own self diagnosis and treatment, he labored with great success on those who came to see him in great numbers. He was
President of the Alabama Medical Association, Professor of Physical Diagnosis and Clinical Medicine at the Alabama Medical College. A Methodist, Knights Templar, Democrat." (ref., History of Alabama and Dictionary of Alabama Biography, Vol. 111, pages 627-8.)

Dr. Edmund Pendleton Gaines was the son of William Dabney Gaines (a double-first cousin of General Edmund Pendleton Gaines) and Helen Toulmin Gaines. Dr. Gaines married his first cousin, Mary Jane Lindsey Toulmin, at Toulminville and moved to Mobile where they resided for the remainder of their married lives at 751 Government Street. The family home still stands next to Church Street Cemetery, commonly known as the Quigley house or the national Junior Miss headquarters. It passed to Dr. Gaines' daughter Amante Gaines who married Judge Oliver J. Semmes (Admiral Raphael Semmes' son) and was purchased in 1901 by Mrs. Susan Norris Owen Quigley (1861-1946), widow of Albert Mountain Quigley.


In 1875, Dr. and Mrs. Gaines also purchased 908 Government St. from Mary Bolles Roberts, widow, but never lived there, instead renting it to other families until Harry T. Pillans bought it from the widow Mary Toulmin Gaines about 1892. Mary Toulmin Gaines' sister-in-law Mary Montague Henshaw Toulmin (widow of Judge Harry T. Toulmin, first cousin of Dr.E.P. Gaines and nephew of his mother Helen Toulmin Gaines) later lived at 908 Government St. with her sister Elizabeth Pillans and died there.
Helen Toulmin Gaines was also a sister of Frances Toulmin who married General Edmund Pendleton Gaines and Emma Sarah Toulmin who married Thomas Hord Herndon.
