United States Navy Lieutenant MacLaughlin died in an aircrash in the Vietnam War. Donald was stationed on the USS Enterprise and was a 1963 graduate of the United States Naval Academy. Donald is honored on the Vietnam Memorial Wall 04E051.

On 02 Jan 1966 USS ENTERPRISE launched a number of combat missions in support of Allied forces. One two-plane mission, with LTJG MacLaughlin flying wing, was directed against a storage site near Duc Pho, Quang Ngai Province. The weather was poor with low cloud and fog, the plane was able to make a low pass over the target, but radio contact with MacLaughlin was lost shortly thereafter. The wreckage of MacLaughlin's plane was later found on a nearby mountainside, but efforts to recover MacLaughlin's body (which was sighted from a helicopter) were unsuccessful due to enemy presence. Donald is listed as Died While Missing.

The Lt. Donald MacLaughlin Jr. Award — also known as the "Don MacLaughlin Award" — has been given annually since 1973 by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) to the nation's most outstanding college lacrosse midfielder in NCAA Division I and Division II. The award is named after Lieutenant MacLaughlin, an All-American midfielder for the U.S. Naval Academy men's lacrosse team.
