William Bishop died before the 1900 census , leaving behind a widow and two young children both of whom are known to have been adopted. One of the two adopted children was my paternal grandmother and the other a brother, Wilber, born April 1899. One day after her 1915 marriage my grandmother was on the Roanoke City Market where members of the George Rufus Bishop family recognized her. This story was conveyed to me by her biological first cousin, J. Hunter Bishop. George Fred Bishop and his wife, Kathleen Emma (Cadd) Bishop attended my grandmother's funeral. I grew up with a common knowledge among my father's family that my paternal grandmother's maiden was Bishop. I never knew however that she was adopted by the Ferris family until sometime after her demise. She was survived by a half-sister, Lennis Gladys Lawson.

William Bishop, son of John & Sarah (Richardson) Bishop, married March 01, 1894 Botetourt County, VA Massie L. Pickering, daughter of Andrew & Martha Susan (Lollis) Pickering. In 1900 Massie, widowed, is listed as living with her mother, Susan Pickering, and the said two children.
