Joel Elam, a farmer by occupation, and one of the first business men of Cleburne, was born in Spartanburg District, South Carolina,10 Apr 1818. He began life for himself as a tinner in LaFayette, Alabama, under the firm name of Elam and Towers, and he subsequently went to Talladega, AL. In 1856 he came to Texas, settling in Rush County, eight miles from Henderson where he followed farming. He has been a member of the Baptist Church for years and also served in the Confederate Army in Company E, Texas Infantry.
