Barton Howerton Cross was born in 1801 in Randolph County, Virginia (WV). His parents were John Cross (1729-1810) and Barbara Borer Cross (1754-1813). There was a book published about this family by their 2nd great granddaughter which details the roots of this "Hillbilly" family from WV. The roots of both dates back to royalty along with history of their "Wyckoff" family in New York & New Jersey, their Revolutionary War history as well as their ancestors contributions to America from the very beginning of this country's history . Their 2nd great granddaughter who was born a West Virginia "Hillbilly" in 1947 is very proud of all West Virginia Hillbilly families (families who were in WV from the beginning 1800s) because their history goes back to all of their ancestors' contributions to America from the 1600s and their royalty lines before that time as well as their contributions to the wonderful state of West (by God) Virginia since 1863 and Monongalia County (W) VA since 1976.

Barton married Deborah Ann Moore (1804-1846) on April 6, 1823 in Randolph County, Virginia (WV). Deborah Ann Moore was the daughter of Daniel Moore (1774-1842) and Deborah Poling Moore (1774-1842). Barton and Deborah had 14 children. All children were born in Hunters Fork, Randolph or Barbour County, VA (later W.V.). This couple also had at least 117 grandchildren.

Children of Deborah Ann MOORE and Barton Howerton CROSS: Sarah C. Cross was born abt 1823 in Hunter Fork Community, Randolph County, Virginia. She married John W. Barnhouse on Nov. 2, 1859. Sarah died in 1880. Barton Howerton Cross II was born in 1824. He married Emily Black ((1829-1852). Barton's 2nd wife was Juliann Canfield (1830-1912). Barton died in 1888. Barbara Cross was born in 1825 in Hunter Fork, Randolph County, VA and died July 20, 1888 in Barbour Co, WV. She married William S. Moore. Rachel Cross was born in 1826 in Hunter Fork and died on Feb. 17, 1882. She married Allen Phillips (1833-1876). John Wesley Cross was born in 1829 at Hunter Fork and died Aug. 3, 1898. John married Nancy Ann Ramsey (1828-1893). Daniel Cross was born 1831 in Hunter Fork and died 1862 in Cheat Mountain CSA. He married Catherine and they had 5 children. George W. Cross was born in 1832 in Hunter Fork. He married Elizabeth Digman (1827-1909), and George died in 1913. Jackson Cross was born on Nov. 3, 1834 in Hunter Fork and died June 8, 1907 in Belmont County, OH. He married Mary E. Moore (1838-1884). Levi Cross was born on Aug. 13, 1836 in Hunter Fork and died Dec. 12, 1915 in Stringtown, Barbour County, WV. He married Angeline Price (1838-1927). Levi is also a veteran of the Civil War and was a minister. William M. Cross was born on Aug. 16, 1838 in Hunter Fork and died in 1920. He married Sarah Catherine Fink (1846-1895). His second wife was Christina Delauder (1865-1943. Simpson Cross was born in 1842 in Hunter Fork. He also served in the Civil War, died in 1918 and is buried at the Stringtown Graveyard in Barbour County, WV. He married Elvira Poling (1847-1931). Christina Cross was born in 1843 and died in 1922. She married Joseph Fitzwater (1838-1924). Jacob B Cross was born in 1844 and died abt 1912. Jacob was a veteran of the Civil War. He married Barbara Shaffer. Charles Cross was born in 1846 and died in 1927. He married Nancy Louise Moore (1845-1927). Deborah and Barton had at 7 sons and 1 grandson who fought in the Civil War. They were the parents of 14 children, 108 grandchildren, 467 great grandchildren and 1104 2nd great grandchildren.

Deborah Ann Moore Cross died in 1846. Barton Cross then married Mary Ann Polly Delauder (1822-1882). This was 2nd marriages for both Barton and Mary. Mary's first husband was Elias Fink (1820-1848). This couple had 3 children together. Barton and Mary had one daughter, Arminda Cross (1855-1938) who married Lemuel Laffayette Poling (1857–1933). This couple had 7 children.

Barton and Deborah had 7 sons and 1 grandson who served in the Civil War. Barton died at Hunter's Fort, Barbour County, WV on Aug. 21, 1882. There is a book out now about this family called "Roots of a Hillbilly Family from WV: Cross Family - Civil War".
