Private, Company K, 8th Virginia Cavalry under the command of Colonel's James M. Corns & Walter H. Jenifer; Lt Colonel's Thomas P. Bowen, A.F. Cook, Henry Fitzhugh & Albert G Jenkins and Major P.M. Edmondson.
He was born in Wytheville, Wythe County, Virginia to Jesse E. Sedgewick & Charles Beville and was attending school when the war started, He enlisted in the Confederate Army on May 13, 1862 in Smyth County, Virginia. He fought in the following battles; Shiloh (April 1862), Shenandoah Valley (May - June 1862), Gaines Mill (June 21, 1862), White Oak Swamp (June 30, 1862), Malvern Hill (July 1, 1862), Campaign in Northern Virginia (August 16 - September 2, 1862), Gettysburg (July 1 - 3,1863) & Virginia (May 1864 - April 9, 1865). The cavalry was not at the surrender at Appomattox as it cut through federal lines and disbanded that same day. He returned to Virginia and in 1867, he crossed the plains to California, settling in Colusa. He
served as Deputy County Clerk from1868 - 1870 and was appointed Under - Sheriff in March 1870 by Colusa County Sheriff J.B. Stanton. He continued in that position for four years, when he was again appointed Under - Sheriff by James L. Howard and he remained in office until his term expired. He was elected Colusa County Assessor in 1875 for four years. After filling this responsible position, he was appointed Under - Sheriff in 1880 by Sheriff John M. Steele and again serving again under Mayberry Davis. In 1886, he was elected Colusa County Sheriff and was re-elected in 1888. In 1872, in Colusa, he married Miss Lutie Williams and they have three children; Virginia Beville (husband, George I. Cason), Clarence B. Beville & Mrs. Willie May Harding. He helped build the cornerstone of the Colusa Trinity church on August 15, 1877. He is a member of Camp Pap Price, United Confederate Veterans, Post #1360 & Equality Lodge #240, F. & A.M. Aside from his comfortable residence at 412 Clay Street, Built in 1873, he is also the owner of an apricot & peach orchard of 20 acres, one mile west of town. He passed away at the age of 82 years and is buried in the Colusa Community Cemetery, Section H, Lot 3, Grave 7.
