His father was Joseph Ellis, a Revolutionary War veteran of the Battle of Cowpens, South Carolina, and his mother was Charlotte Redwine. Radford was the uncle of Captain Daniel Ellis of Cival War fame. Rev. Ellis was the minister of one of the two Christian churches in Carter County in the 1840's.
