His father was Joseph Ellis, a Revolutionary War veteran of the Battle of Cowpens, South Carolina, and his mother was Charlotte Redwine. Radford was the uncle of Captain Daniel Ellis of Cival War fame. Rev. Ellis was the minister of one of the two Christian churches in Carter County in the 1840's. His church, located in Turkey Town, had 118 members in 1848 and was the parent church of the present Brick Christian Church.[Reference: " Carter County Tennessee and Its People 1796-1993 "]
