Don was born March 20, 1935 in La Grange County. He married Mary Lu Johnston on April 16, 1955 in Fort Wayne and had resided in Hartford City since 1972, moving here from Noblesville.
He was a veteran of the Army during the Korean Conflict. Don was regional sales manager for Durkee's, Fort Wayne, and former owner of Tri State Sales, Hartford City.
Don was a member of American Legion #159, Elks Lodge #625, Amvets Post #23, and Moose Lodge, Gas City. He had been active in Hartford City Little League, having both coached and umpired. He was an avid card player and liked to visit casinos.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lu; a daughter, Cheri; and those who raised him, father, Harrison Applegate; uncle, Charles Randol, and aunt, Mildred Randol.
A visitation will be held from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, July 22 at Waters Funeral Home, 501 W. Washington St., Hartford City. A graveside service and burial will be at 1 p.m. Monday, July 23, 2012 at Woodruff Cemetery, Wolcottville.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Blackford Community Foundation, P.O. Box 327, Hartford City, IN 47348, for future scholarships for teachers.
