Suicide without cause
James Reynolds, Head Salesman for Kelly, Maus and Company, Shoots Himself
James Reynolds, head salesman for Kelly, Maus and Company, 190 Lake street, kissed his wife good-by at their home, 4328 Oakenwald avenue, yesterday morning at 8 o'clock, left the room, said good morning pleasantly to a domestic in the hall, passed down the kitchen stairs into the basement and was found there a few minutes later dead, with a bullet in his brain from a revolver which he still held tightly in his right hand. The housekeeper, who had been employed by Mr. Reynolds seven years, heard two shots fired in rapid succession, and ran down the stairs. Mr. Reynolds lay on the hard cement floor of the basement in a heap, the blood pouring from a wound in his head. The woman shrieked for help, and several neighbors rushed in. The first shot fired by Mr. Reynolds glanced from his forehead, hit the ceiling and dropped to the floor. The second entered his head just above the ear, and death must have been instantaneous. Mrs. Reynolds, who was sick in bed, was among the last to hear of the tragedy. She is completely prostrated and in a critical condition. No cause for Mr. Reynolds' suicide is known or can be imagined. He was well-to-do, and his employers speak of his business ability and his personal characteristics in the highest terms. He was, they say, one of the best salesmen in Chicago. His home life was happy, and besides his wife he leaves two children, aged nine and twelve. An inquest will be held this morning at the house of the deceased. The body will be taken East for burial. Mr. Reynolds was forty-eight years of age, and was the only son of ex-Governor John J. Reynolds of Rhode Island.
