Nellie Pearl was born December 11, 1924 to Lillie Pearl (Wiley) and Richard Raymond Welch at the Welch ranch 17 1/2 miles west of Campo, (Baca County), Colorado. She was the third child and third daughter of Lillie and Dick, with elder sisters Bessie and Thelma coming before her.
The Welch family lived in a rock and mud home they built themselves in the heart of the Dust Bowl in Baca County.
Nellie married William Franklin Fry on June 16, 1942 in Grants Pass, Oregon. The young Fry family would settle and raise their family in Stockton, California. Their four children included Bill Jr., John, Marcia, and Michelle.
Nellie was an integral part of the family's trucking business, "William Fry Trucking," as dispatcher and accountant.
Although the trucking business consumed so much of Nellie and Bill's time and energy, they always made time for their children, ensuring their participation in school and after school activities. They made frequent trips to the Santa Cruz Boardwalk when their children were small and later yearly fishing trips. Eventually, they obtained a cabin near South Lake Tahoe, and enjoyed their time away from the family business and without the constant ringing of the telephone.
The Fry home was always open for family and friends.
Nellie passed away after a long struggle with her health at the age of 73 in Stockton, California on July 15, 1998.
(Bill worked until the age of 80, with the goal of keeping Nellie in her home until her passing. He remarried after Nellie's death and enjoyed nearly 10 years with Gloria Joan Santini. Bill died on January 19, 2008.)
