Businessman. A native of St. Louis, Missouri, his father was Samuel Wainwright, one of the founders of the Wainwright Brewery Company. Ellis succeeded his father as head of the brewery and subsequently became president of the consolidated St. Louis Brewing Association. For a time, only the Lemp and Busch breweries outsold the Wainwright lager labels. He is buried, along with his wife Charlotte, in the notable mausoleum designed by Louis Sullivan. The mausoleum is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. He died in his suite in the Buckingham Hotel in St. Louis of a stroke resulting from hardening of the arteries.
