Emily Marie (Steffel) Johanek, 91, of Route 1, "Sleepy Hollow Road", Denmark,
Wisconsin. Emily many times said "The Devil don't want me and the Lords not
ready for me yet"!. Well, the Lord has now made ready a place for Emily and
has called her home on December 26, 1990. Emily had been awaiting His call
since January, 1987 at the Kewaunee Health Care Center where the Caretakers
administered to her deteriorating body. However, Emily's heart and spirit
remained strong to the very end. Because of the deteriorated condition, the
casket will remain closed according to Emily's and the familiy's wishes.
Emily was the daughter of Anna and Frank Steffel of Pilsen, Wisconsin and was
well known for her cooking and baking for weddings, especially her rye bread.
Emily was preceded in death by husband, Joseph J. Johanek, perhaps best known
for his road building ability for Kewaunee County and being a Deputy for the
Kewaunee Sheriff's Department from 1929 until his passing in 1965.
Survivors are her son, Al Johanek (a/k/a Jay Wells) and his wife, Grace of
Appleton, Wisconsin, grandson, Jay A. Johanek and his wife, Debbie and daughter,
Tavya of Lawton, Oklahoma; granddaughter, Gail Marie Johanek, now residing on
the family farm on Sleepy Hollow Road, Town of Franklin, Kewaunee County; a
sister, Mrs. Matt (Eva) Zima of Route 1, Denmark, Wisconsin; a brother, Andrew
Steffel of Green Bay, Wisconsin; stepson, Tony Wagner and his family of Appleton,
Wisconsin.
Interment will be at Saint Mary's Cemetery in Tisch Mills following a Mass at
St. Mary's Catholic Church, 2 pm Saturday, December 29. A memorial wake will
be at Knutson-Boettcher-Cotter Funeral Home, Denmark, from 4 pm to 9 pm Friday
and prior to the procession to the church. In lieu of flowers, donations to St.
Mary's Parish, Tisch Mills are requested.
