Raised in McMinnville, Oregon, Michael King Smith graduated from McMinnville High School in 1984. He was an honor student, varsity athlete, and an Eagle Scout, and showed the signs of leadership at an early age. After graduating, he continued his education at the University of Washington and in 1989 received a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the US Air Force. He graduated first in his class from Columbus Air Force Base. He also received awards including the Commander's Trophy, Distinguished Graduate and Flying Excellence. Smith went on to become an F-15 pilot and Lead for the 123rd Fighter Squadron of the Oregon Air National Guard. At the same time, he served as President of Evergreen Ventures, Inc., and Evergreen Air Venture Museum. He was founder of the Evergreen-Doe Humane Society and President and Founder of Quality Aviation Services. Captain Smith died tragically in an automobile accident in 1995. There is a statue of him at the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum, McMinnville, Oregon∼

MICHAEL KING SMITH

A service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 23, 1995, in Bethel Baptist Church in McMinnville.

Mr. Smith died March 20 of injuries suffered in an auto accident in Virginia. He was 29.

He was born Jan. 20, 1966, in Portland and was raised in McMinnville.

He was president of the freshman, sophomore, junior and senior classes at McMinnville High School.

He graduated from the University of Washington in 1989.

Mr. Smith was a captain and fighter pilot in the Air National Guard.

He was licensed to fly many commercial and military aircraft.

Mr. Smith was president of Evergreen Ventures in McMinnville and owner and operator of Carolyn Orchards in Dundee. He also was a member of the board of directors of the Valley Community Bank in McMinnville.

He graduated from Fighter Lead Training School at Holloman Air Force Base.

He was a professional race car driver in the Super-V series from 1986 to 1989.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn; father, Delford of McMinnville; mother and stepfather, Robert and Jo Lynn Thomas of Tigard; brother, Mark of McMinnville; and grandmother, Addaline Dossey of Portland.

Burial in St. James Catholic Cemetery in McMinnville.
