Marilyn J. Alstead, 80, of Duluth, passed away surrounded by family Friday, May 8, 2009.

She was born in Bessemer, Mich., on June 27, 1928 to James and Ellen (Hill) O'Leary.

Marilyn grew up in Hurley, Wis., and was a 1946 Hurley High School graduate. Shortly after High School, Marilyn made her home in Duluth. She married Richard C. Alstead on March 8, 1952 in Spooner, Wis., and together they raised four children. While her children were being raised, Marilyn was active in the Grant Elementary P.T.A. As an adult, she proudly attended courses at the Duluth Vocational Technical College. She enjoyed playing cards and bingo at the Grandview Community Center.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to St. Luke's Hospice, Nurses That Care and Touching Hearts for the comfort and care given.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Richard C. (1973); her son, Richard J. (1976); three sisters, Joan Oman, Kay Decker and Geri Levra; and her grandson, James Kennedy.

Survivors include her three children, Pamela (Robert) Kennedy of Santa Rosa, Calif., Lee (Christine) Alstead of Deer Park, Wash., and Roderick (Ellora Gherna) Alstead of Duluth; one sister, Patricia Sopko of California; two brothers, David and Robert O'Leary both of Hurley, Wis.; three grandchildren, Bryce Alstead of Reno, Nev., Jessica Alstead of Duluth, and David Kennedy of Santa Rosa, Calif.; two great-grandchildren, Justin and Brianna Kennedy; and her beloved canine companion, Max.

GRAVESIDE INURNMENT: at Forest Hill Cemetery will be held at a later date, with a Celebration of Life to follow. Memorials are preferred to Animal Allies. 4006 Airport Rd. Duluth, MN 55811
