Died at Chehalem Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born in Bareilly, India, to missionary parents and came to the United States at the age of 8. He lived in Michigan, Alabama, Oklahoma, California and came to Oregon in 1930, making his home near Mt. Hood. He worked for the Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management in Portland. On March 17, 1933, he married Juanita Shelby in Oklahoma. During WWII he was a welder at the Oregon shipyards. When the war ended he worked for the Portland Public School District for 17 years as a custodian and retired in 1977. He enjoyed gardening, particularly vegetables and flowers. Survivors include: wife Juanita of Newberg; son James of Vancouver, WA; daughters, Sharon Newville of Newberg and Rhoda Ann of Federal Way, WA; brothers, Isaac of Renton, WA, and Steven of India; sisters, Alethia Ashbaugh of Renton and Mary Jackson of Portland; numerous nieces and nephews; 11 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. He was preceded in death by sons John Mark in 1996 and Larry in 1949.
