Joseph Washington Shiflett was the son of George Washington Shifflett and Verbie Dell Parker and the grandson of Robert William and Emma Dillard Parker. He grew up on the family farm in Arnold's Valley. He served in the navy and he worked in the coal mines in Richland, Virginia until he broke his back around 1959. He moved his family back to Rockbridge County and retired from Georgia Bonded Fibers. He loved to do wordfinds and hunt possums at night. He married twice. First to Ruth Martin and then Barbara Ann Meeks, whom he had 6 children with. (Jean, Joey, David, Wanda, Judy, andd Jeffrey). He also had a daughter by Minnie Chittum named Kathryn.
