Note: I had asked for help with the missing pieces of this family, and a fellow member/relative named Karin wrote this:
"August Ferdinand Arndt was born 23 Dec 1844 in Zamow, Kreis Greifenberg, Pommern, Preussen, baptized 5 Jan 1845 in Zarben, Kreis Greifenberg, Pommern, Preussen, parents were Martin Friedrich Arndt and Friedericke Henriette Caroline Prey. The Zarben records are online at Ancestry and also on Family Search. I extracted the entire parish and connected all the people and have pictures of Zarben."

Thanks Karin!

August was the first husband of Bertha Kison, from Pomerania, Germany.

August was an immigrant from Germany, married Bertha in Germany and they emigrated together in 1873.

August and Bertha were the parents of four children, Gustav Albert August Kison-1869, Johannes "John"-1874, Magdelene W.-1876 and Maria B. "Mary"-1878. It appears that their first child was born before they married.

August was only 34 years old when death took him from his family in 1879.

Bertha remarried in January of 1880, but would have hardly come through her grief when a diphtheria epidemic struck their family in 1881, taking three of August and Bertha's children within a 10-day window in January of 1881; Johannes, Magdelene, and Maria. The children were only 6, 4 and 2.

Note: Between 1876 and 1886 diphtheria was second only to consumption (tuberculosis) in causing mortality in the state of Michigan, with the exception of 1881 when it topped the list, killing 2063 people.
