Thomas Jefferson Thomas was a merchant marine who died at sea during WWII. He was lost either the 16th or 17th of March, 1943, in the North Atlantic.

He was the head cook on the merchant marine ship SS James Oglethorpe that was sunk by a torpedo from the U-758, a hit that did not immediately sink the ship. He volunteered to stay with the ship along with about 21 other men in order to take the ship to port in England. The next day the ship disappeared along with all remaining crew members. It is possible that the U-91 sunk her but the "kill" was claimed by U-758.

T. J. had a premonition, a gut feeling, that he wouldn't be coming back from this last mission. He used every last penny in his pocket to call his family and tell them he loved them before boarding that fateful ship. He spoke of not returning. (He never married. He died perhaps not knowing he had a son, John Walter Thomas.)

God Bless his sacrifice and bravery.
