May 23, 1922 - July 17, 2012
Emily Dodson Cantwell, age 90 of Sevierville, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 17, 2012.
Emily was born on May 23, 1922, to Herbert and Ruby Massengill Dodson and grew up on her family's farm, which had been established in 1796 in the Buffalo Springs Community of Grainger County. It is one of a small number of Tennessee farms that have been owned for longer than 200 years by members of the same family, and she always enjoyed spending time there. When she moved with her husband and daughter to Sevierville in 1951, she became a member of First Baptist Church, where she remained a member for the last 61 years of her life.
She was preceded in death by her brothers Bill, Bob, and Willis Dodson; nephew Gary Dodson; and sister-in-law and brother-in-law Katherine and Heinz Steinbach.
Survivors include her husband of 67 years Thomas (T. J.) Cantwell; daughter and son-in-law Ruby and Robert Sherrill; sisters-in-law Betty Dodson, Louise Dodson, and Vada Sellers and her husband J. C. Sellers; nieces and their husbands Carol and Arthur Moorhead, Rose Mary and Bill Oglesby, Nancy Moles, and Carol Ronka; nephew Brian Steinbach and his wife Mary Reyner.
Family members are grateful for the excellent and compassionate care Emily received from all her caregivers: Nancy Moles, Emily's niece who cared for her during the entire four years of her illness, Brenda Ward, Helen Robertson, and Faye Deavers; and the physicians, nurses, CNAs, and other staff of LeConte Medical Center and Covenant Hospice. Everyone was pleasant, professional and caring. Also, we appreciate our friends and extended family here and far away. Thank you for every prayer you spoke, note you wrote, card you sent, hour you spent, call you made, or comfort you gave.
Emily's deep Christian faith, optimism, resilient spirit and love for her family and friends brought us great joy. She created countless memories that will continue to comfort and sustain us throughout our lives.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Children's Ministry or the CARE Ministry of First Baptist Church, 317 Parkway, Sevierville, TN 37862, or to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, 1900 Richmond Road, Lexington, KY 40502-1204.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 21 from 5:00-7:00 pm in the West Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville, followed by the funeral service at 7:00 pm. Dr. Robert Cantwell will officiate and Richard Wallace will share remembrances. Entombment will be on Sunday, July 22 at 3:00 pm in the mausoleum of Hamblen Memory Gardens, Morristown, Tennessee. Arrangements by Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville. (www.atchleyfuneralhome.com).
